EXPERIMENTAL FLUID DYNAMICS. Understanding moderate to high speed phenomena such as explosion and cavitation bubble dynamics, liquid drop impact, and vortex and jet flows is facilitated with still, video, and high speed movie photography. Major components of this capability include:
- Redlake MotionScope PCI high speed video imaging system with monochrome and color cameras capable of frame rates up to 8,000 and 2,000 frames/sec, respectively; a MiDAS integrated data acquisition system with 8 analog, and 6 digital input channels and a 1.25 MHz maximum sampling rate.
- 2 HYCAM high speed movie cameras capable of 40,000 quarter frames/sec
- Still and video photographic equipment
- Several frequency generators and digital storage oscilloscopes
- TSI hot wire/ hot film anemometer
- Plexiglass vacuum cells with electric spark discharge to study explosion and cavitation bubble dynamics
- A 72 x 5 x 4.5 ft tank with wavemaker and plexiglass walls over half its length.
- Supporting data acquisition equipment, instrumentation, and sensors including flow meters, pressure gauges, sensitive hydrophones, and high frequency transducers.
